Smallmouth Bass of the Gatineau River: An Underrated Fighter

While everyone talks about walleye, the Gatineau River quietly harbors one of the best smallmouth bass populations in Quebec. Pound for pound, it's the most combative freshwater fish you'll catch in Outaouais.
Smallmouth bass prefer cool, clear, well-oxygenated water with rocky bottoms — exactly what the Gatineau River offers for dozens of kilometers. The stretches between Wakefield and Low are particularly productive, with their succession of rapids, pools and rocky banks.
Early season (late June after the spawn), males still guard nests in sheltered bays with gravel bottoms. Approach quietly and cast topwater lures like the Whopper Plopper or a popper — the surface explosions are spectacular. Crayfish-colored tubes (brown-orange) cast near rocks are also very effective during this period.
In midsummer, smallmouth school up on rocky points and structures in moderate current. The go-to technique is drop shot with a 3-inch Ned Rig worm in green pumpkin. Keep the lure 15-20 cm off the bottom and let the current make the tail vibrate. Overcast days are best — smallmouth become more active and move higher in the water column.
Fall is the best-kept secret. From September to mid-October, smallmouth feed frantically before winter. Medium-sized crankbaits imitating redfin shiners are deadly. Cast parallel to rocky banks and retrieve with irregular pauses.
Gatineau River smallmouth regularly reach 2 to 4 pounds, with trophies over 5 pounds landed each season. Current regulations set the limit at 6 bass per day, with a minimum size of 30 cm.
