Pike in Outaouais Lakes: Where to Find the Giants

Northern pike is the apex predator of Outaouais lakes. Aggressive, powerful and reaching impressive sizes, it offers pure adrenaline fishing. Here's how to target trophy-sized specimens in our region.
The most productive pike lakes in Outaouais include Lac des Trente et Un Milles (near Bouchette), Lac Pemichangan, Blue Sea Lake and of course Baskatong Reservoir. These bodies of water share common features: vast weed beds, shallow bays and abundant prey populations.
In spring, pike concentrate in shallow bays filled with emergent vegetation. This is the post-spawn period and they're hungry. Large spoons (4 to 6 inches) in white or silver, retrieved just below the surface, trigger violent strikes. Soft plastic swimbaits in 6-inch sizes are also devastating.
In summer, big pike retreat to deeper weed edges, drop-offs and points where water stays cooler. Trolling with jointed lures of 8 to 10 inches along weed edges is the most effective method for specimens of 10 pounds and up. Slow down your presentation — big pike prefer a slow, easy meal.
Fall is trophy pike season. When water drops below 15°C, pike migrate to rocky structures and deep points. Suspending jerkbaits and large jigging spoons work wonders. Specimens of 15 to 20 pounds are realistic in the best Outaouais lakes during this period.
Recommended gear: 7-foot minimum heavy-action rod, baitcasting reel with 40-pound braid, and most importantly a steel or 80-pound fluorocarbon leader. Pike cut through monofilament like butter with their 700 razor-sharp teeth. Always have long-nose pliers and a jaw spreader to handle these fish safely.
