Walleye Fishing at Baskatong Reservoir: Seasons, Spots and Strategies

Baskatong Reservoir, with its 41,300 hectares of surface area, is the crown jewel of walleye fishing in Outaouais and one of the most productive bodies of water in all of Quebec. Here's what you need to know to plan a successful trip.
In spring (mid-May to late June), walleye gather in shallow water of 2 to 4 meters near rocky shorelines and creek mouths. This is the post-spawn period when they feed actively. Quarter-ounce jigs with soft plastic tails in chartreuse or white are deadly. Drag them slowly along the bottom with small, regular hops.
In summer (July-August), walleye migrate to deeper structure: rocky points, drop-offs of 6 to 10 meters and underwater islands. Trolling with long-lipped crankbaits at 2 to 3 meters deep is the most consistent method. Perch colors (green and orange) are most effective in Baskatong's stained water.
Fall (September-October) is trophy season. Walleye in the 3 to 5 pound range become common and specimens over 8 pounds are possible. They concentrate on rocky shelves of 4 to 8 meters where they chase schools of minnows. Jigging spoons like the Rapala Jigging Rap in size 7 are devastating.
Ice fishing (January-March) at Baskatong is an institution. Huts concentrate in the Bay of Islands and around Pointe à David. Drill your holes over depths of 8 to 12 meters above gravel bottoms. Phosphorescent half-ounce spoons, jigged aggressively then held still, trigger strikes.
Local tip: Baskatong is a reservoir whose water level fluctuates considerably. Check water levels before your trip — a rapid drop moves fish to the main channel, while a rise pushes them onto newly flooded shallows.
