Brook Trout Fishing: The Secret Streams of Outaouais

Brook trout — or speckled trout — is Quebec's iconic species, and Outaouais is full of small streams and headwater lakes where they thrive away from fishing pressure. It's an intimate, technical and deeply rewarding style of fishing.
The best habitat in Outaouais is found in cold-water streams fed by underground springs, especially in the higher-elevation terrain of the southern Laurentians. The region's ZECs (Chapeau, Pontiac, Bras-Coupé-Désert) harbor dozens of small waterways where brookies live naturally, without stocking. The key is to seek cold water: if the temperature exceeds 18°C, trout concentrate around cold springs and small tributary confluences.
For spin fishing in streams, use an ultralight 5 to 6-foot rod with a reel spooled with 4-pound monofilament. Inline spinners in size 0 to 2 (Mepps Aglia, Panther Martin) in silver or copper are timeless classics. Cast upstream and retrieve with the current — the spinner should turn just enough to vibrate without rising too quickly to the surface.
Fly fishing these streams is a magical experience. A 7 to 8-foot rod with 3 or 4-weight line is more than enough. Dry flies imitating mayflies (Adams, Blue Wing Olive) work from May through September. Early season, Pheasant Tail and Hare's Ear nymphs in size 14-16 are more productive.
Essential tip: in small streams, the approach is everything. Stay low, move slowly and avoid walking in the water when possible. Brook trout are extremely wary — the vibration of your footsteps on the bank is enough to spook them. Wear dark clothing and always approach from downstream, as trout face into the current.
Regulations vary by zone and body of water. Generally, the Outaouais season opens the last Friday in April and the limit is 10 brook trout per day in most areas. Some lakes and streams have special regulations — always check before fishing.
