Hiking in Gatineau Park: A 4-Season Guide

2026-01-08

Gatineau Park, with its 361 km² of hills, lakes and forests just 15 minutes from downtown Gatineau, is a four-season playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Here's our seasonal guide to making the most of it.

In spring (April-May), the park awakens with an explosion of wildflowers. The Pink Lake Trail (2.5 km, easy) offers a unique spectacle: this meromictic lake is one of the few in the world whose deep and surface waters never mix. Trilliums, hepaticas and trout lilies carpet the forest floor. More ambitious, the Wolf Trail (10 km, intermediate) passes through spectacular maple stands and offers views of the Ottawa Valley. Watch for muddy trails — gaiters and waterproof footwear are essential in April.

In summer (June-August), highland trails become the ideal escape from urban heat. The King Mountain Trail (2.5 km, intermediate) leads to one of the park's finest lookouts with a panoramic view of the Ottawa River and the city. The Eardley Escarpment Trail (7.8 km, difficult) follows the spectacular rock escarpment, one of the most impressive geological formations in the region. Start early morning to avoid the heat and bring at least 2 liters of water per person.

Fall (September-October) is the premier season. The park's mixed forests transform into a breathtaking canvas of reds, oranges and yellows. Champlain Lookout is the region's most photographed viewpoint. The Lac des Fées Trail (3 km, easy) is ideal for families, while the Lusk Lake Trail (9.5 km, difficult) offers total immersion in autumn color. Thanksgiving weekend generally marks peak foliage.

In winter (December-March), the park transforms into a white paradise. Over 50 km of marked snowshoe trails cross fairytale landscapes. The Owl Trail (8 km loop, intermediate) is the Ecotone team's favorite for its 360-degree summit views. Dress in layers: synthetic base layer, merino wool insulating layer and windproof shell. Aluminum-crampon snowshoes are preferable to plastic models on icy trails.

Essential gear for all seasons: hiking boots with good ankle support, telescopic poles, first aid kit, park map (available at entrances), energy snacks and sun protection even in winter.

Ecotone Gatineau is your natural starting point before a Gatineau Park outing. Snowshoes, poles, backpacks, water bottles and technical clothing — we have everything you need for every season.
