Hunting Safety: The Essential Guide for Outaouais Forests

Every season, preventable incidents occur in the woods. In Outaouais, where hunting territories are vast and sometimes remote, preparation and respect for safety rules can literally save lives.
Rule number one, universal and non-negotiable: never point a firearm at anything you haven't positively identified as your target. In Outaouais, mixed forests create zones of reduced visibility — movement in the brush is not a moose until you've clearly identified the entire animal.
Wearing a fluorescent orange vest is mandatory during big game firearm season. The law requires a minimum of 2,580 cm² of surface visible from all sides. Even beyond the legal requirement, wear it — hikers, trappers and other hunters share the same territory. For turkey hunting or bow hunting from a blind, where orange isn't required, be extra vigilant in identifying your surroundings.

Prepare a survival kit suited to Outaouais: compass and topographic map (GPS can fail), lighter and waterproof matches, emergency blanket, whistle, first aid kit with tourniquet, and water. In October-November, nights can drop below zero quickly.
